Current students, faculty, and staff
The OCAD University community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of George Docherty. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art (before it became OCAD U) in 1976 and then worked at the University from 1981 to 2021 as a faculty member and Integrated Media (INTM) technician.
Remembering George Docherty
OCAD U Professor Michael Page, a close friend and colleague, remembers Docherty as “a much-loved character at OCAD U and before that, OCA.” “His mischievous nature along with decades of knowledge placed him in the role of Resident Critical Technologist, rather than his post as a technician for INTM,” said Page.
In many ways, Docherty fostered the early development of emerging technologies including the video, sound and holography facilities at OCAD U. He also assisted hundreds of students in all aspect of their work.
“George, it was said, could take apart a jet aircraft and put it back together correctly,” said Page. “There was, evidently nothing he could not fix,” added Page. “He will be missed. George was a delightful presence working in our midst, initially as a student in the 70s and later as technician. There was much laughter.”
INTM Technician Gerald Grison first met Docherty as a first-year art student and began working with him a year later in a work study position in the INTM studios. They worked together as technicians for six years and knew each other for 20.
“I had the privilege to have George as a mentor when I was a student, as a colleague, working together as technicians in the INTM studios and as a friend,” said Grison. “He was a man with strong convictions, always delivered with enthusiasm and a sense of humour that cannot be matched,” he added. “His enthusiasm, quick wit, and deep care for our students lit up the halls, studios and afterparties.”
Docherty’s daughters, Tuula, Kelly and Pipsan, remember their father for his “brilliant creativity, inspiring technical knowledge, forward-thinking conceptual mind, trademark cheeky wit, and personal commitment to helping students and colleagues bring their art to life.”
“As a steadfast pillar of the Integrated Media Department and enlivening teacher of Video and Holography in the early half of his career—George was an animated supporter and mentor to his students, many of whom became colleagues and friends,” they added.
Tuula, Kelly and Pipsan, have organized an event in honour of their father:
“Celebration of Larger Than Life” January 24,2025, at 7 p.m.
The Unity Studio, 1444 Dupont St., Studio 19
In lieu of donations, guests are asked to bring something to make a toast to Docherty, if they wish.
OCAD U extends its condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.
