Providing expertise and support in the creation and implementation of effective teaching and learning strategies in studio, classroom and technology-enabled learning environments.

The Faculty & Curriculum Development Centre (FCDC) supports the development and implementation of OCAD University’s Academic Plan and enhances teaching and learning at the university through programs, initiatives and resources that foster pedagogical reflection, strengthen educational quality, guide educational change, and support student success in art and design education. We work with faculty, academic leadership and other members of the university, scholarly and local communities to facilitate faculty professional learning and teaching development, curriculum development and renewal, resource development to support teaching and learning, and educational research. Connect with us by email at FCDC@ocadu.ca or via Instagram.

Our Centre takes a collaborative approach to our work, grounded in community engagement and relationship-building, and we strive to integrate our commitments to equity, access and decolonization throughout the different areas of our mandate. Our work is guided by our commitments to:

Wholistic Theory and Practice

We value diverse Indigenous epistemologies and ways of knowing and seek to develop and integrate wholistic approaches across our programs, resources and initiatives according to the Indigenous principles of respect, relationship, reciprocity and responsibility. We respect the wisdom and knowledge of Indigenous Elders.

Equity and Access

We advance inclusive teaching practices and support the development of critical and transformative pedagogies that remove barriers to learning and enhance access to education for all students.

Scholarly and Critical Approaches

We engage in the creation and sharing of educational research and knowledges that foster scholarly and critical engagement with teaching and learning in art and design education.

Art and Design Education

We recognize the pedagogical specificity of art and design education and the centrality of materiality, process, peer learning and critique to studio-based learning. We foster the exploration of pedagogies and curriculum that recognize the unique role of art and design in developing and communicating complex conceptual, theoretical and critical worldviews.

Linguistic Diversity

We value and respect diverse languages, literacies and ways of knowing and communicating, and we highlight and foster the development of diverse critical literacies.

Community

We build relationships and collaborations with and among members of OCAD U’s diverse communities to foster a culture of pedagogical reflection and learning on campus. We strive to build sustained and reciprocal relationships with communities within and beyond OCAD U.

Sustainability and Wellness

We foster sustainability by promoting wellness of self, community, resources and Land. We seek to develop nurturing, just, sustainable and ongoing relationships with each other, Land and place.

Self-Reflexivity

We are a learning organization and as such, we reflect upon our values and practices, participate in our diverse professional communities and contribute reflectively to dialogue and institutional and social change.
