The Writing & Learning Centre is a valuable resource to support student learning journey at OCAD U

About the WLC

The Writing & Learning Centre (WLC) offers programs and resources for undergraduate and graduate students to support their self-direction as learners and help them develop the writing, communication and academic skills they need to be successful in their studies. We are here to support students throughout their time at OCAD U — from orientation all the way through to graduation — as students explore and develop their creative practice and learn to communicate in ways that are authentic to them as artists, designers, writers and creative professionals.

We believe that the cultures, languages, identities and experiences students bring to university shape their unique voice and how they communicate and contribute their knowledge to our community. We welcome multiple languages and ways of knowing in our programs and services. We also recognize that learning is a different journey for each person, and we aim to provide tools and strategies that enable students to feel ownership of their own learning. Our service model is collaborative and students can expect to participate actively alongside staff and peers in our programs. We believe that teaching and learning happens through conversations rooted in trust and respect, and we value and continue to learn from the knowledges and experiences students bring.

We work to reduce educational barriers and advocate for equitable access through academic support programming. We strive to create an accessible space, and we invite students to share their access needs. Throughout a student's time at OCAD U, they can participate in our programming in different formats, including individual and group, in person and online. Students can meet with one of our tutors or writing consultants, practice the language and vocabulary of art and design, learn about academic integrity and build their learning skills.
