The first year of university can be challenging.

OCAD U’s student mentor program pairs new and first-year undergraduate students (mentees) with upper-year students (peer mentors) who support them in their academic success and personal growth. Peer mentors share their experiences and offer guidance on university procedures, student services, extracurricular activities and strategies for success. Mentoring is a great way for students to get involved, connect with peers and help one another succeed.

How it Works

The program runs from June through October. New and first-year undergraduate students are encouraged to sign up between May and September to get matched with a peer mentor. Mentees are supported by their mentors through the summer leading up to the beginning of classes, and during the fall term.

Recognizing mentors

OCAD U's Peer Mentor Excellence Awards acknowledge peer mentors who have made outstanding contributions to supporting new and first-year student mentees.

Two Peer Mentor Award recipients are announced at our annual Student Leadership event and each receives a $500 cash prize, an award certificate, and a congratulatory letter from the Vice-Provost, Students & International.

Peer mentors who have shown true commitment and have volunteered for three or more years are presented with a special commitment pin.
