Ira Buhot-Perry (AOCA, Material Art & Design, 1972)
My initial intention in attending OCA was to open a boutique upon graduation.
My fondest memories were learning the various new skills, solving interesting problems presented to us; sharing ideas with my like-minded peers and making new friendships.
The most important event was the introduction to the field of Art Therapy by a visiting lecturer. It steered me into a completely new direction – namely, the use of art as a means of healing a damaged psyche.
I trained as an Art Therapist: and later used my OCA-learned skills to teach Art in the public school system for 18 years. I loved passing on my knowledge to my young students and watching them develop.
For many years I volunteered by working and doing displays in the Gift Shop at the Pier 21 Museum of Imagination in Halifax. At present I am retired and spend some time doing various crafts but most of my time centers around my garden and flowers.
My message to current students… Take advantage of all the knowledge and skills that are available to you. From the people who are there for you. Be open to widening your horizons. Share your knowledge. Be kind + compassionate. You never know what is out there just waiting for you. And don’t forget to STOP and smell the roses.
