Anna Keenleyside
Environmental Design, 2017. Junior Designer at an Interior Design Firm
I am constantly finding inspiration through my creative friends, colleagues at work, and other designers. This is what makes me excited to go to work and bring new ideas to the table.
Why did you choose to attend OCAD U?
I was originally introduced to OCAD U during a school fair. I was trying to find a more creative route into becoming a designer, where the creative process was really valued and this program sounded like the perfect fit. During a campus tour, I was drawn to the busy city lifestyle and inspired by the students and profs which really confirmed my decision.
Please briefly describe your current job/practice.
I am currently transitioning from a Junior to Intermediate designer at an interior design firm in Ottawa. My role as the right hand to the lead designer includes creating architectural drawing packages, finish selections, and merchandising. We focus on luxury residential design so we work directly with our clients to create beautiful spaces.
How did you get started in your career?
I was actually contacted during GradEx (OCAD U's annual Graduate Exhibition) because another designer saw my thesis project. I started the job a week after classes ended.
What were your policies regarding internships, volunteering, and paid work?
I was definitely aware that when I was starting out, not to expect a lot in terms of paid work. I knew I had to pay my dues and the experience alone was extremely valuable. Luckily, I found a paid internship one day a week while I was in my senior year.
What do you enjoy most about your work? What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
My favourite part of my job is the balance between creativity and critical thinking. Working for a small business is very fast-paced, which I love because no two days are the same. This is both the best and most challenging aspect because I am constantly problem-solving.
What skills or relationships developed at OCAD U helped you participate in your field? Is there anything you would have done differently?
I developed friendships with a small group of friends from school. We all have found careers in different fields of the industry - Floral Design, Architecture, Interiors, etc. We were a very driven group of people and I think that surrounding yourself with like-minded people makes you push yourself to be better. I find that because the Environmental Design program had such a large focus on concept building, it makes me stand out in comparison to other programs that are more technically focused. Now, I really appreciate the tools I learned for concept building to create meaningful designs.
What are the key responsibilities you maintain for your practice?
I think that staying inspired is what keeps me passionate about my career. I am constantly finding inspiration through my creative friends, colleagues at work, and other designers. This is what makes me excited to go to work and bring new ideas to the table.
What are your personal and professional goals for the coming years?
I am currently in the process of completing my NCIDQ exams to get my ARIDO Certification. I hope to get the certification over the next year or two and eventually become a Senior Designer. I hope to become an Intermediate Designer this year to start leading my own projects. In the coming years, I want to continue traveling to get more inspiration to incorporate into my designs and own a home one day.
