Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards Statue Call for Artists

OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to partner with the Writers Guild of Canada to create an exclusive call-for-submissions from members of the OCAD U community.
The Writers Guild of Canada is seeking a sculptor with experience working with metals to develop and fabricate a metal prototype for a new award statue that will be replicated by the WGC and issued to recipients at the annual WGC Screenwriting Awards. The artist be awarded a total of $7,150 which includes $4,000 for award statue development, $2,500 for reproduction rights worldwide in perpetuity, and a $650 production budget for up to two metal prototypes.
The recipient will be selected by the Partner based on submission guidelines. The artwork is expected to be developed as new work based on an existing portfolio style, and derived from a proposal. Artworks will be produced along a timeline ending in early January 2025.
PARTNER & PROJECT DETAILS
The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) represents more than 2,500 professional English-language screenwriters in Canada — the creators of entertainment watched around the world. The WGC administers contracts and advises producers on how to engage professional screenwriters, and celebrates and promotes its members by hosting the annual WGC ScreenwritingAwards, as well as events and panels on the craft and business of screenwriting. The WGC is the voice for Canadian screenwriters.
The scope of work for this project includes:
Development and delivery of a new awards statue prototype that will be replicated by the WGC for their annual awards ceremony and based on the following criteria:
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Please provide the following information in one PDF document:
- Full contact information (Name, phone, and email)
- Creative CV
- Website and/or Social Media handle
- A brief (300 words max) descriptive project proposal that:
- contextualizes your artistic approach to the award statue within the context of your artistic practice
- describes your practical approach to the production of the award statue. This may include the metal and materials you intend to use, manufacturer(s), how you plan to keep the reproduction cost within the ~$325 budget.
- lists prior experience with sculptural commissions for clients especially working with a foundry to produce metal sculptures (if any)
- 5 - 10 sample support images of past artwork, in a single PDF
- A corresponding list for the support images including: artist name, title, year, medium, size details, in one PDF (in the same PDF as artwork images)
*If submitting as a group, applicants can submit the above materials for each individual group member, or as the group
KEY DATES
November 21, 2024 – January 6, 2025: Artwork production period. Including sketches, approval process and final prototype delivery

QUALIFICATIONS
- Current OCAD U undergraduate students who have completed 15+ credits, current OCAD U Master’s students, or recent OCAD U alumni (2021 - 2024)
- Must be able to create new, original work within the project timeline and budget outlined above
- Previous experience with sculptural commissions for clients is an asset, especially working with a foundry to produce metal sculptures
- SCIN, MAAD, INDS, IAMD students and grads are encouraged to apply.
*Collectives and groups are welcome to apply as long as the group consists only of eligible OCAD U students/grads.
