Transmission draws inspiration from curatorial projects that have redefined exhibition practices and questioned authorship, such as Lucy Lippard’s Numbers Shows and Hans Ulrich Obrist’s Do-it. These projects championed flexible, open-ended formats and a DIY approach, with ever-evolving interpretations shaped by cultural contexts.
A year-long virtual residency challenged 15 art students from OCAD University (Toronto), Camberwell College of Arts UAL (UK), and City & Guilds of London Art School (UK) to reconsider the meaning of creating material works in a world increasingly reliant on screens. At the same time, the residency recognized the enduring value of material practice and its evolving cultural, social, and political significance in relation to place.
Two exhibitions have emerged from this collective effort: the first in Toronto at Stackt Market, followed by an expanded presentation in London at Millbank Tower in mid-May.
