OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to partner with Hullmark to create an exclusive call-for-submissions from members of the OCAD U community.
A project budget of $13,000 (for artwork development and delivery of high resolution digital files) will be awarded to an artist or collective to realize a temporary mural on the exterior hoarding of 1071 King St. West construction site. The recipient will be selected on the basis of a short project proposal, the strength of their portfolio of existing work, and other professional skills. Artists are encouraged to speak to the relevance of the proposed building and surrounding area in their proposal.
SITE & PROJECT DETAILS
1071 King West is a proposed 17-storey rental apartment building with ground-floor retail in Toronto, designed by Kirkor Architects Planners for Hullmark, First Capital, and Woodbourne Canada Management, Inc. An extension of the West Toronto Railpath would pass through the flatiron-shaped building at ground level. www.urbantoronto.ca/database/projects/1071-king-west.40226
The scope of work for this project includes:
• Development of a mural along two main sections of hoarding, one along King Street and one along Douro Street:
- Along King St. the mural will be an 8 ft tall artwork broken up into three sections with lengths of: 59.70 ft, 109.13 ft, and 45 ft
- Along Douro St. the mural sit on top a concrete jersey barrier. It will be a 4 ft tall artwork with three sections with lengths of: 65.23 ft, 13.03 ft, and 12.88 ft

• The selected artist(s) will submit a series of preliminary work to the client for approval
• Preliminary work to be adjusted based client’s comments
• Final draft to be submitted to the client for final approval before production of the final artwork.
• The final artwork will be submitted to the printer as a high-resolution full scale digital artwork for print on adhesive vinyl, no later than September 17, 2024
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

- Creative CV
- Website and/or Social Media handle
- A brief descriptive project proposal that contextualizes your approach to the mural within the context of your artistic practice (200 words max)
- A corresponding list for the support images including: artist name, title, year, medium, size details, in one PDF (in the same PDF as artwork images)
*If submitting as a group, applicants can submit the above materials for each individual group member, or as the group
KEY DATES
September 3 - 17: Artwork production period. Including sketches, approval process and final artwork delivery as digital files
September 18 onward: Artwork produced on vinyl and installed by Hullmark
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current OCAD U undergraduate students who will have 15+ credits by start of Fall 2024 term, current OCAD U Master’s students, or recent OCAD U alumni (2020 - 2024)
- Must be able to create new, original work within the project timeline outlined above
- Previous experience with art commissions or producing large-scale murals for clients is an asset
- ILLU, DRPT, IAMD students and grads are encouraged to apply.
*Collectives and groups are welcome to apply as long as the group consists only of eligible OCAD U students/grads.
RATE
- $13,000 Commission fee
