Presentation by James Olley
As a contemporary artist, my research examines painting's rich history. As a regional artist who lives in Guelph, Ontario I am influenced by my own surroundings, philosophy, and the role of representation in modern painting. The evolution of my research is rooted in ideologies associated with the growth of urban culture, architecture, landscape, social spaces and how we inhabit these spaces.
Photography and painting, since the invention of the daguerreotype in 1893 led to a rupture in image making. This has had a deep and opposing reaction, leading to questions of authenticity, autonomy and the continuation of the modernist critique. These two pictorial systems; representation and abstraction are found in my work. As a painter, I explore flat and pictorial spaces associated with representation and abstraction.
