How do we interpret the family archive? FAMILY MATTERS:
Portraits Inspired by the Family Archive asks how we interpret familial photos. The works in this exhibition explore and examine the artists’ family’s archive of photographs and history to express and navigate identity and personal positionality through portraiture. The combination of personal positionality, identity, and the artist’s family injects sentiment and depth into the works. FAMILY MATTERS utilizes elements such as physical gesture, symbolism, and surface expression to convey familial intricacies through paint.
Project Description:
FAMILY MATTERS: is a body of work constructed by third-year OCAD U students. The artists in this exhibition explored painting portraiture in “Family Portrait as Archive,” taught by Ilene Sova. In this class, artists experimented and explored their family’s personal archives with various painting materials, methods, and approaches while considering their identity, positionality, familial and history to construct family portraits. Throughout the process students challenged themselves conceptually as well as technically. Exploring family dynamics and memories plays an integral part in this exhibition, examining and highlighting family history through creative interpretation.
