鼻觀 Nose Contemplation IAMD MA Thesis Exhibition by Changhao Li
Examining China’s olfactory culture of the Song Dynasty, this thesis exhibition explores the intersensory aesthetics between scent and visuality for a contemporary artistic rendition of traditional practices. The project conducts research on a synaesthesia-related aesthetic theory — Nose Contemplation (biguan, 鼻观), which suggests one can smell the picture through skilled meditation. Utilizing the visual medium of photography infused with incense smoke, this exhibition creates a multisensory immersive experience of conjoining oneness for all to practice olfactory meditation.
