Art Creates Change is a long-running lecture series, almost 20 years, sponsored by the Faculty of Art at OCAD University. The series focuses on artists whose work engages and challenges the conventions of creative practice and political imperatives, and their various locations of agency.
Sandra Brewster’s work employs a visual poetic, often using photographic transfer mediums and other multidisciplinary methods, to engage concepts of movement that express an internal relationship with identity. Her material practice leads to visceral images and surfaces that suggest a collision of place and time, most especially of and for diasporic Black communities.
Brewster is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. She has exhibited internationally from Los Angeles to Lagos to Brazil, and at many galleries and festivals. She was awarded the Gattuso Prize for outstanding featured exhibition at the CONTACT Photography Festival, the Toronto Friends of Visual Arts Artist Prize, and the Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award in 2024. Sandra Brewster received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University and a Masters of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto. She is represented by Olga Korper Gallery.
