Submission deadline: Sunday November 12th by 11:59pm
In this experimental animation studio course, students will work collaboratively with animation students from iAcademy in Manila on a research project and exhibition looking at how the Philippines and Canada have been connected throughout their respective animation histories. The film will be shown in the context of an exhibition on the History of Animation in the Philippines at iAcademy.
The main output will be a short, animated collaborative documentary highlighting these connections, with a special focus on the development of Canadian animation technologies such as Toonboom software, which has been instrumental in the development of animation in the Philippines. The project will also look at the Canadian animation industry and its use of offshore production in the Philippines. The project will involve recording the stories of Filipino and Canadian players in the animation industry who have developed the animation tools and productions that have had an impact on animation in both countries.
The course will look at contemporary discourses and approaches to animated documentaries and the role of colonialism in animation history, provide technical workshops in After Effects and other animation or projection techniques, and will culminate in a group exhibition/screening in Manila.
Here are some shared workshops for iAcademy and OCAD U students to be considered:
experimental approaches to animated documentary production
presentations on research in progress: topics including animation histories of Canada and the Philippines, industry practices like offshore production, questions of colonialism, history and cultural implications of digital animation technologies (eg. Toonboom)
technical production skillshare session on AfterEffects, Toonboom and other techniques
expanded animation practices when exhibiting or projecting animation in a gallery space
The course is best suited to students who have completed 10 credits or more (2nd year) and have taken some animation courses. Skills in film production, sound recording, and post-production would also be a strong asset. The call is open to students in the Faculty of Art, Faculty of Design and Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
The production of the documentary will be collaborative: research and recording of stories will happen both in Canada and the Philippines, OCAD U students will meet remotely with iAcademy students throughout the Winter term to share progress on their research, engage in group critiques at different creative stages of the project and engage in joint animation software workshops. While in Manila, participants can expect the first week to be intensively producing or finalizing the animation, with the final week being dedicated to setting up the exhibition screening.
Students will be required to attend kickoff meetings and workshops in the winter term (not necessarily in-person) and an in-person exhibition/screening of the final work in Toronto upon our return in June 2024
Travel Dates: May 10th – May 25th, 2024
