He holds an MFA degree in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, an AA in Visual Communication Design from the Art Institute of Seattle, and a BA in Urban Studies from New College of Florida.
As a practitioner, Roderick has a broad range of experience in design studios both global and local in scale. He was a design lead in the Seattle, USA office of the global design firm nbbj, and has freelanced in the USA, the UAE and Canada. Complex typographic, narrative and material explorations are Roderick's core interests and skills in Graphic Design.
As a professor, Roderick focuses on first year design education as a space where the languages, experiences and politics forge a path towards visual communication. His current scholarship focuses on what a design education is, why and how it matters, and how it may change in the coming years post-pandemic.
At present, Roderick is one half of a small studio – simonjames – a partnership with his wife Michelle Grant. The studio focuses on small architectural and wayfinding projects, with occasional editorial work.
