OCAD U stands with the Muslim community in wake of racist attack

One candle burning

On behalf of OCAD University, I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed and injured in the horrific attack that took place in London, Ontario on Sunday. We are deeply saddened by this senseless act of hate and violence, and we grieve and stand with the members of the Muslim community at OCAD University and across Canada.

OCAD University condemns all hate and violence directed to individuals and groups based on religion, ethnic or cultural heritage, place of origin, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation, age, or any other identity. We recognize the profound and essential value that diversity brings to the creation, reception and circulation of creative practices and discourse. We believe that our community is enriched by a wide spectrum of knowledge and experience embodied in an inclusive variety of communities, philosophies and ways of knowing.

This heartbreaking tragedy serves as yet another stark reminder that we still have much work to do to eradicate racism, Islamophobia and hate of all kinds in our society. That’s why it’s important for all of us to work together – hand in hand – to continue efforts to stop hate and racism by finding ways to co-create a future where differences are appreciated and celebrated, and where discrimination, hate and violence no longer exist.

This act of hate comes at a time when our Indigenous community is still grieving the devastating loss of the 215 children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc. OCAD U remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and fostering an educational system that redresses the lasting impact of the genocide against Indigenous people and the horrific legacy of residential schools.

OCAD University’s support services are available to our community members. Students may access support through our Student Wellness Centre at swc@ocadu.ca to speak to a counsellor. Staff and faculty may access support through OCAD U’s Employee Assistance Program.

Although we have not been together as a community on campus over the past year, that day is soon coming, so I want to take this opportunity to remind all of our students, faculty and staff that you belong to a caring community that is committed to providing a place where you feel safe, supported and respected.

Take care,
Ana Serrano
