OCAD U mourns the loss of beloved artist Wallace Strachan Edwards

The OCAD University community is deeply saddened by the loss of Wallace Edwards, who passed away on December 25, 2022, at age 65. Edwards graduated from the Communication & Design program at the Ontario College of Art (OCA) in 1980, before it became OCAD U.

About Wallace Edwards

Wallace Edwards was a treasured children’s book author and illustrator whose vivid imagination inspired his many whimsical stories and drawings.

He won the Governor General’s award for his first book, Alphabeasts, and went on to write and illustrate 16 more books, winning many awards nationally and internationally. Edwards’ most recent book Do You Wonder? was published in 2022, with his final book Pigs Can’t Fly currently in press.

Edwards’ paintings can be found in public and private collections around the world. After a 2014 Canada Council-supported New Media Artist Residency at York University, he went on to create and exhibit work in augmented and virtual reality internationally and was a trailblazing force in the development of visual language and techniques for future forms

Recently, he was beginning to create large-scale paintings in acrylic.

Edwards touched the lives of thousands of children in classrooms and his memory lives on through his work.
