UHN Tunnel Beautification Competition
The Background:
Under the University Avenue in Toronto lies a series of underground tunnels, connecting five major hospitals: Hospital for Sick Kids, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret, and Toronto Rehab. They provide a vital link in the City of Toronto’s health system, used by staff and families to transport patients between hospitals day and night, every day of the year. The tunnel system ultimately gives access for medical staff to provide quick and efficient emergency care from one designated area to another. However, over the years, the system has fallen into disrepair. It has become an unsightly passageway for patients and healthcare workers.
Currently three architectural firms are bidding for the tunnel beautification project. Their goal: to deliver a more sensitive physical setting for patients and healthcare workers. One firm will be chosen to provide the final blueprint.
The creative arts can play a valuable role in promoting a positive state and well-being. Fundamentally, art offers authority and meaning to any location.
The task of OCAD U students will be to work with the architects to provide the aesthetic (images) for this network of tunnels. (See competition details and guidelines).
