Josie Val is an eagle clan, multidisciplinary artist, from Batchewana First Nation. Working through methods of hybrid storytelling, her work is based in connection to family, land and community. After graduating in 2019, she moved back to her community and worked in local journalism, as well as land-based teaching/learning. She began working in flat-stitch beadwork during the pandemic, connecting through online beading circles held by community knowledge keepers creating a safe space to connect and learn through isolation. Josie uses her beadwork to build interpersonal connections with community and kin. She is currently working as a painting instructor with a focus on beginner style lessons and workshops for all ages.
