International Experience Spring 2024

International Programs Spring 2024

Chiang Mai, Thailand!

Using the historical and contemporary context of Chiang Mai, Thailand, this course examines how expressions of cultural heritage are transmitted, revitalized, and expanded in contemporary practice. Over three weeks, students from all disciplines will learn directly from community leaders, participate in hands-on workshops, and gain first-hand experiences that complement personal research and/or production. These activities will take place in the temples, palaces, galleries, and streets of the 700-year-old city, as well as nearby rural villages and upland indigenous communities.

The course will explore three expressions of cultural heritage through the lens of "then and now."

We will delve deep into the importance of preserving the continued transmission of these techniques and reflect on how and why many of these approaches have also been adapted and refreshed. The course format is flexible to support studio-based art and design practitioners, researchers, and art educators.

The project will also look at the Canadian animation industry and its use of offshore production in the Philippines. The project will involve recording the stories of Canadian players in the animation industry who have developed animation tools and productions that have had an impact on animation in the Philippines.

The course will look at contemporary discourses and approaches to animated documentaries and the role of colonialism in animation history, provide technical workshops in After Effects and other animation or projection techniques, and will culminate in a group exhibition/screening in Manila.

Pokhara, Nepal!

Design Abroad is an exciting course at OCAD University offering students a unique opportunity to work internationally with a local community to co-design solutions that have a meaningful impact. In 2024, Design Abroad will take place in Pokhara, Nepal, from May 12 – June 1, 2024. This intensive three-week course allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of the local culture through exploration, observation, and other design tools.

Working in groups, as well as individually, students engage with organizations and members of the community to identify challenges and possible solutions. Students then integrate what they have learned through this participatory design process to develop design solutions that are innovative, appropriate, and implementable.

This course not only offers students the ability to gain international travel experience but also provides the opportunity to co-design with others from a different cultural context in order to create solutions that can have a lasting impact. Through a mix of structured interaction with the community as well as studio-based work and critique, students from OCAD University’s various design disciplines learn how to develop design solutions that aim to improve the lives of their intended users.
