Erin Finley: Margaret Atwood for Mayor

Solo exhibition featuring new drawings
ocadu

Drawing affords a distinct freedom for an artist in interested in transgressive, juvenile, perverse and outlaw themes. Unlike painting, with its academic gravitas, drawing possesses levity because it is not tied to history's precursory codes. Elements of cartoons, comics, zines, and high-school doodling are merged here to create an alternate realm. Generally, the provenance of the line-work comes from Honoré Daumier though any sense of Victorian restraint is more than offset by kamikaze subject matter and a measure of hyperbole normally reserved for Looney Tunes celluloid. The result is what Terence Dick calls a passage "through the universal standards of taste into some alternate dimension of appreciation." Produced with pen, watercolour, oil stick, and glitter, the drawings in this exhibition explore feminist resistance and outlaw culture--with a nod to Margaret Atwood.
