Bonavista Biennale announces 2019 artist line-up
Newfoundland is located on migratory and trade routes that have for centuries linked the cultures and commodities of North America and Europe. Ktaqmkuk (the Mi’kmaq word for Newfoundland) is traditional unceded Mi’kmaw territory that became part of these connecting routes. FLOE (re)considers the history of exchange, while acknowledging the histories and cultures of the Beothuk, Mi’kmaq, Innu and Inuit of the province, through the perspectives of a diverse group of artists.
Participating artists are: Jordan Bennett, Bob Blumer, Maria M. Campos-Pons, Ian Carr-Harris and Yvonne Lammerich, Kym Greeley, Robert Hengeveld, Anna Hepler, Jason Holley, Thaddeus Holownia, Barb Hunt, Mark Igloliorte, Wanda Koop, Meagan Musseau, Sean Patrick O’Brien, Paulette Phillips, Meghan Price (OCADU instructor in the MAAD Program), Jerry Ropson, Camille Turner, D’Arcy Wilson.
2019 curators are: Catherine Beaudette (2 Rooms Contemporary Art Projects), David Diviney (Art Gallery of Nova Scotia), and Matthew Hills (Grenfell Art Gallery, Memorial University of Newfoundland).
“Geodesic, geological, aquatic and structural are terms that describe some of the artworks in Bonavista Biennale 2019,” said Artistic Director and Curator Catherine Beaudette. “Nomad, Afronaut, cheerleader and storyteller describe the artists behind the work. This year’s show promises to be a stimulating floe of ideas.”
